Busting Your Business Myths

Updated: May 24, 2024

Woman expert

One of my favorite things to do as a coach is to challenge the beliefs my clients have about business growth and career development.

I often have a unique perspective about what works when it comes to success because I see things from both a professional and spiritual standpoint. Sometimes the ideas that show up are spot on - and sometimes they sound a little crazy ;).

But when I notice an idea resonates and has my client feel like reaching her goal could be much easier than she imagines, I know I’m onto something. And when she gets results that neither of us could predict, then we’re both hooked.

Here are some common myths about what it takes to create success - and some fresh approaches that might just work for you too.

Myth 1: Volume equals money

Most people believe that more is better.

In business, that translates to serving more people, selling more products, spending more time and putting out more energy to increase income.

In my opinion, this mentality is one of the leading causes of exhaustion for women.

While some women love and thrive in volume-based businesses, many see it as the only path to success.

I recognized this years ago while trying to follow a volume model that just wasn’t working for me. I felt like something was wrong because I couldn’t (and didn’t want to) play the numbers game I thought was necessary to build my business.

Once I decided that I preferred to offer high-end, personalized experience to clients, everything flowed and my business grew.

So know that there are different models that can boost your income in ways that are tailor made for you…and know that less can actually make you more.

Myth 2: Business is better from strangers

I often hear that you have to work with strangers to make good money. That means reaching out to, meeting and networking with those you don’t know…and, depending on your personality, feeling pretty uncomfortable in the process.

While you can and will do business with strangers, you don’t have to constantly seek them out to scale up.

One of my clients reached six figures in her first year back as an attorney (after a break) by reconnecting with - and even bumping INTO - former clients who needed her help.

Another booked more than $11K in a week from existing clients she wasn’t noticing because her focus was only on new prospects.

A third was so relieved that she could have “coffee dates” with friends and acquaintances instead of making cold calls, her income rose by 30%.

While you might not reach your next level by only serving current connections, your inner circle is often your best asset…and money from strangers isn’t worth more than money from those you know.

Myth 3: Success is all on you

It’s tough to feel that you, and you alone, need to create your success.

While I’m all about personal responsibility, there’s often so much pressure - even for those who work on a team - to make everything happen solo.

Personally, I love supporting those I care about by sharing their work and making introductions that can help them professionally. I’m also fortunate to get referrals, opportunities and exposure from others that have a big impact on my own growth…because I’ve asked and because I’ve stayed connected.

Trust me, I know it can be hard to ask for help. I coach clients regularly on how to ask graciously and authentically - with language that feels comfortable - so they won’t avoid outreach. I also help clients create partnerships and referral programs so they can build business collaboratively.

Once we find the right method and work through any discomfort, they soon realize that they’re more supported in their success than they’ve imagined or allowed.

So if you want and need help, know that it’s out there…and remember that’s it’s right here too :).
